a promise believer not a law keeper
Recently our dear pastor Eric has been preaching through Galatians. This book of the Bible has been a little hard for me to understand in the past. I get confused sometimes when the New Testament books bring up commands and events from the Old Testament. Understanding the Old Testament law and the fulfillment of it through Jesus Christ has also been a challenge. The messages on Galatians are so helpful. It is also helpful in my understanding of sanctification (overcoming sin and living for God). How is it we are to not work for or earn God's favor in anyway yet we are to strive for living a holy life? What do I need to do to be a Christian? How am I to dress, talk, spend my money, be a friend, spend my free time, work, relax, be a wife; what am I to teach my child, watch on TV, listen to on the radio, drink or not to drink, what am I to believe? Does God talk to his children about this practical kind of stuff? Thankfully He does. Yet, it is no longer a set of rules He commands us to keep. That is the point of the Old Testament law... for us to be able to see that we need more than precise rules to live a righteous life. Galatians 3:21 says, "Is the law then contrary to the promises of God (the promise that being right with God & having the hope of heaven when we die is by faith in Jesus- not by keeping the law)? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so the the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who.................." what? To those who read the Bible everyday? To those who try to live a moral life? To those who try to be kind and generous? To those who work hard and live an honest life? To those who dress a certain way, listen to a certain preacher, etc.? NO! "......the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Just believe? This has caused me to read the Bible more diligently to find out what I am to believe. What are these promises I am to remember and delight in? Promises like, "whoever would save his life (live for himself) will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself (it still does not satisfy)?" Luke 9. Or in Isaiah 55 God promises, "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare." Psalm 37:4 "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Ephesians 1:8 " For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this faith is not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Reading these promises and believing God's word is helping me with the practical things in life...
